Hotel Review: Andaz Bali — A Relaxing Haven in Sanur

Executive Verdict

Envisioned as a contemporary Balinese village, Andaz Bali succeeds in delivering an idyllic resort experience that sets itself apart from the crowd through its excellent service and luxurious rooms. Located in laid-back Sanur, Andaz Bali would appeal to travellers looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Bali’s beach clubs and nightlife.

The key highlights of my stay were the fantastic à la carte breakfast buffet and the sunrise views over Sanur Beach. I also took part in a sunrise yoga class, which made for a particularly memorable start to the day.

While breakfast was excellent overall, the experience was occasionally marred by slow service and missed orders.

👍 What I liked

  • Expansive and tranquil resort grounds that made the resort feel secluded
  • Warm and attentive service
  • Breakfast was a consistent highlight of my stay

👎 What could be better

  • Breakfast service was occasionally patchy with missed orders
  • At USD 450/night, the stay felt expensive relative to what I would pay to return.

Booking & Value

For this stay, I booked a Standard King Bed Room for two nights at an average cash rate of USD 450 a night. This was a ‘Stay Play Indulge’ rate, which included USD 50 in F&B credit and USD 50 in resort activities credit, in addition to daily breakfast. However, the rate did not include the 11% tax and 10% service charge added to the final bill.

At USD 450 a night before taxes and service charge, this was not a cheap stay although the F&B and resort activities credits did provide some value and led me to explore the resort’s dining and activity options that I probably would not have tried otherwise.

Overall, I felt I was paying a premium for the Andaz experience, but I did not mind too much as this was a property that I had wanted to visit for a long time. For a return stay, I would be more comfortable paying around USD 250–300 a night.

At USD 450, I thought Andaz Bali represented poor value. I would be much more interested in returning to this property at around USD 250 – 300 a night.

Location & Arrival

Andaz Bali is located in Sanur, which is on the south-eastern side of Bali. It is a beachfront property and shares a broader compound with its sister Hyatt property — Hyatt Regency Bali.

While Sanur is a far cry from being one of Bali’s hottest or most famous neighbourhoods, that is actually one of my favourite things about it. Sanur lacks the grandeur of the manicured beach resorts in Nusa Dua; it also lacks the trendy HYROX gyms, beach clubs and digital-nomad energy of Canggu and Seminyak. What it does have is a more relaxed and understated environment, with enough good hotels, restaurants, cafés and spas to keep things interesting, while avoiding much of the traffic and intensity found elsewhere in southern Bali.

The journey from the airport to Andaz Bali takes around 30 minutes, but note that travel time can vary considerably depending on traffic. The hotel also offers paid airport pick-ups if preferred.

Arrival & Check-in

A few days prior to arrival, I received a welcome email and questionnaire where I could indicate my preferences and requests, and I was pleased to find that both of my requests (a room in the Desa building and additional pillows) were fulfilled. It was a nice touch and reassuring to know that these requests had actually been read and considered.

I arrived at the property before noon as traffic was light. It was easy to book a Grab from the airport, and upon arrival the baggage handlers were quick to assist with my luggage. I was then led to the check-in area, where welcome drinks and cold towels were served.

Unlike many hotels, there were no conventional check-in counters. Instead, guests could sit around the lobby while the formalities were completed. I particularly liked the welcome drink as it was refreshing without being too sweet. I liked it enough to ask for a second glass, which they were more than happy to provide.

The check-in itself was seamless. Although the hotel’s official check-in time is 3 p.m., I was informed that my room was already available and that my luggage would be brought directly there. While escorting me to the room, the staff member also gave a brief introduction to the resort, including where breakfast was served and where the pools were located.

The Room

I booked the 1 Standard King Bed room, measuring approximately 50 sqm.

The room was spacious and well thought out, with a Balinese inspired design that leverages on extensive wooden finishes and warm lighting to give it a very cosy and welcoming vibe. The floor-to-ceiling windows allowed plenty of natural light into the room while making the room feel very spacious and inviting.

What really stood out to me was the large sense of space despite being an entry-level room. It never felt cramped and was way more than just a place to sleep.

Amenities

The room came with complimentary bottled water, coffee and tea. All items in the minibar, with the exception of alcohol, were also complimentary.

Additional bottled water (as well as coffee and tea) could be requested via housekeeping at no charge throughout my stay. I particularly appreciated that housekeeping proactively left extra bottles in the room together with a small note reminding me to stay hydrated in the hot weather.

Bathroom

The bathroom was spacious and large, with two sinks and a very workable vanity area. A large bathtub sat on on end of the bathroom while the shower is located on the other end. There were also ample thick and fluffy towels and two very comfortable bathrobes.

The shower area also included a built-in seat, which I ended up appreciating more than expected. Both the handheld shower and rain shower had strong water pressure, although I personally preferred the rain shower. There was something very relaxing about being able to sit there and enjoy it for a while.

Facilities

Pools

A trip to a beach resort would not be complete without spending a copious amount of time by the pool. Andaz Bali has three pools: Liang Pool, the main beachfront and ocean-facing pool; Santhi Pool, a more secluded and shaded option designed for relaxation; and Alit, the children’s pool.

My favourite was Santhi Pool. Its quiet atmosphere and carefully landscaped surroundings made it a genuinely relaxing retreat, and it quickly became my preferred place to sit, read a book and do very little for a while.

Relaxing by the Santhi pool – total bliss!

Spa

Andaz Bali shares its gym and spa facilities with its sister property, Hyatt Regency Bali. Both are located at Shankha Spa, within the Hyatt Regency grounds.

Guests staying at Andaz can walk over, but I would recommend simply asking for a complimentary buggy transfer. At Andaz, the buggy departs from the hotel’s main pick-up/drop-off point, while at Shankha Spa the buggy stop is directly outside the spa entrance. Staff were also happy to shuttle me back to Andaz after my treatment.

As far as I could tell, you do not need to have a spa booking to use the buggy to Shankha Spa, since the gym is located there as well.

For this stay, I booked a 90-minute Warm River Stone Massage for IDR 1.8 million. One nice surprise was that spa prices were quoted on a nett basis, rather than having additional tax and service charges added afterwards. The therapists were very professional, and welcome drinks and snacks were served both before and after the treatment. The massage itself was superb and easily one of the highlights of my stay.

Afterwards, guests are invited to relax in the post-treatment lounge, where tea and biscuits are served. The lounge overlooks a tranquil pond filled with fish and lotus plants, which made for a very pleasant way to wind down after the treatment.

Not a bad way to end a massage

Breakfast & Dining

Breakfast

Breakfast was served at what Andaz Bali calls the Village Square, located just beyond the lobby. This is where four of the resort’s five restaurants are located, with the fifth — Fisherman’s Club — sitting beachfront beside the main pool.

Breakfast is served daily from 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in an unlimited à la carte format. Their breakfast menu can be found here.

Breakfast was spectacular, and I genuinely enjoyed almost everything I tried. My personal recommendations would be the Crêpe Monsieur, Andaz Prawn Omelette, Village Egg Royal, Sate Ayam and Soto Madura. My companions also highly recommended the Matcha Bircher Muesli and Warmed Banana Bread.

Clockwise: Crêpe Monsieur, Artisanal Cheese Plate, Artisanal Cured Meats Plate, Sate Ayam, Andaz Prawn Omelette
Fish of the Day (Salmon Quiche) – Subject to Change
Village Egg Royal (Homemade cured salmon, tobiko roe, poached egg, english muffin, wasabi hollandaise)

The only real weakness was the service, which could occasionally be inconsistent, with some orders either missed or taking a long time to arrive. Even so, I would still consider this one of the best hotel breakfasts I have had in Bali by a wide margin.

I would strongly recommend booking a rate with breakfast included, as it is one of the highlights of the stay.

Other Dining

The rate I booked came with USD 50 in F&B credit, which I used for dinner at the Village Square. While breakfast was an unlimited à la carte affair, dinner operates more like a conventional restaurant. Guests can choose to sit anywhere within the Village Square and order from any of the four restaurants. I liked this arrangement as it meant everyone at the table could order from a different restaurant without having to agree on one cuisine.

The four restaurants are Wok Wok, serving Indonesian comfort food; Blue Oven, specialising in Mediterranean dishes; Fire Fox, an open-fire grill with grilled meats and Korean-inspired dishes; and Deli & Bakery, which focuses on cakes, desserts, ice cream and drinks.

For my visit, I ordered the Crispy Lasagne from Blue Oven, which was delicious and very generous in portion.

Service

Service at the property was largely what I would expect from a five-star resort. Staff greeted me whenever we crossed paths, while housekeeping and reception were proactive and helpful.

Overall, I found the service warm and polished, though the interactions felt more professional than personal.

Loyalty Recognition

I did not hold elite status with World of Hyatt at the time of my stay, so I wasn’t expecting any status-related benefits.

However, there was no particular acknowledgement of my membership either, which was a little disappointing. In comparison, IHG properties I’ve stayed at in Bali have at least provided a welcome card acknowledging my membership in their loyalty programme.

Final Verdict

Andaz Bali was a property that I’d wanted to stay at for the longest time, and it did not disappoint. The key highlights were the fantastic breakfast, location and overall quality of accommodation.

I think this property would suit travellers looking for a quiet retreat and a relaxing escape from the busier parts of Bali.

Would I stay again?

Yes, at the right price — definitely one of the better resorts I’ve stayed at in Bali.

My return price: Approximately USD 250–300 per night for a room.
